Scene Near Me was born at 1:00pm on November 13, 2011. The baby is lightweight, healthy and kicking out awesome NYC movie trivia to anyone who checks in near the site of a famous NYC movie shoot. Proud parents Dan Blumberg, Luis Miranda, and Avi Dabir see a bright future for this little app, which is already sporting a snazzy silver medal from the hospital where it was born, the NYC Big Apps Hackathon…

So, I participated in my first Hackathon this weekend and, damn, I am glad I did. Sponsored by the City of New York, we entered the NYC Big Apps 3.0 Hackathon. We could build whatever we wanted, so long as we used one NYC Open Data set. Skipping over transportation, crime, 311, and hundreds of other really rich databases, we quickly honed in on the NYC film location database that was created when the book Scenes from the City was published in 2006.

Now whenever you check in with Foursquare within a quarter mile of a NYC film location, Scene Near Me will shoot you a text message letting you know what movie was filmed near you, including the exact location, movie stars, director, and more. The app works! Try it, now! Sign up here:

For example… if you check in at Pivotal Labs, the host of the Hackathon, you might see this on your mobile phone:

Here is a video of our presentation:

Here is the presentation itself. A little razzle-dazzle never hurts, so we used Prezi. (Die Powerpoint, die!)

And here are the photos I took:

Try it out. Give us feedback. We’re not done yet!
